My fellow castaway, Friday
My cat, Friday was named for the obvious, I got her on a Friday. But she was also named after one character in the classic novel "Robinson Crusoe." As the story goes, Robinson Crusoe found himself stranded on a deserted island until one day he discovers that he is not alone, as evidenced by footprints on the beach, which were not his own. He eventually befriends the other castaway and names him "Friday."
When I got Friday at the local shelter one Friday afternoon, I had just moved to the big city, started my first job out of college, and was feeling a little lost in the world. Castaway, alone, somewhat scared. But then there was Friday. Through the next 19 years, she was with me - through jobs good and bad, friends good and bad, relationships good and bad, moves across the country, apartments, houses, and condos.
On Friday (how appropriate) May 14th, 2010, I lost her. I always hoped that when the time came, my pet would let me know, somehow. She did, and I knew.
Today, versus that Friday all those years ago, I've finally found my place in the world. I love my life, and I've met the love *of* my life. I'm engaged to be married for the first time this fall - and I feel as though Friday was telling me "I've brought me this far... the rest you're on your own for." I just want to thank her for being my friend, for showing me unconditional love, for always making me feel better - even on the worst of days.
I'll miss her a lot. Safe travels, Friday. I hope to see you again one day.
